
The North British Distillery Company Ltd. was established in 1885 and currently operates the second largest whisky distillery in Scotland. The Directors and staff of the North British Distillery Company Ltd recognise the environmental issues associated with our major activities relating to waste, water and energy management as well as the issues relating to our peripheral activities. We aim to implement all reasonably practicable measures to prevent pollution to the environment and comply with all current environmental regulations, legislation and approved codes of practice. In achieving these aims the company will:
· Comply with all current environmental legislation and other requirements and keep up to date with relevant and planned changes which could affect our business and the environment;
· Strive to ensure that all of our wastes are handled, stored and disposed of as required not only by legislation, but as examples of best practice;
· Work to reduce the amount of waste produced, in terms of both office, production and other waste;
· Investigate measures which would reduce the consumption of raw materials (especially water, electricity, fuel oil, diesel and gas);
· Maximise the quality and minimise the quantity of all trade effluent discharges in conjunction with regulatory bodies;
· Investigate all opportunities for increasing recycling initiatives;
· Strive to minimise the risk of pollutant disposal to water, land and air;
· Establish objectives and targets to support this policy and review them regularly to improve our environmental performance;
· Minimise the environmental impact of our site transport operations;
· Monitor and review our impact upon the community;
· Maintain certification to the international standard for environmental management systems - BS EN ISO 14001;
· Maintain IPPC authorisation and work towards achieving BAT accordingly;
· Exercise control, as far as is possible, over the environmental impacts arising as a result of work being undertaken on our behalf by our sub-contractors, suppliers and maintenance contractors;
· Undertake a review of this policy in light of any new knowledge, changing legislation or public concerns;
· Provide appropriate training to our employees to enable them to implement this environmental policy;
· Seek to continually improve its environmental performance through positive management activities.
The North British Distillery Company Ltd will endeavour to increase environmental awareness and understanding within the workforce in order to meet the above aims. The Managing Director has direct responsibility for the implementation of this policy and the effective implementation and operation of the environmental management system.
